Question 1  A 554-gram piece of metal (specific gravity = 8) is suspended from a spring scale and then submerged in water as shown in the picture below. What force does the spring scale read?
submerged solid
Question 2  A 10 cm-thick block of ice, having a density of = 0.92 x 103 kg/m3, will be submerged in an ocean, having a density of = 1.03 x 103 kg/m3. If you assume that there is little to no thermal exchange, how much of the ice will be submerged?
Question 3  In the figure shown below, a box of dimensions of x = 13 cm, y = 6.55 cm, and z = 13 cm rests on the bottom of a tank. The tank filled to depth D = 40 cm with water. If the tank is open to the atmosphere, what is the force on the (shaded) top of the box?

Question 4  If the density of granite is 2.6 x 103 kg/m3, how much pressure would a solid cylindrical pillar having a radius 25 cm and a height of 131 cm exert on the ground?
Question 5   In the pipe shown below, which carries water, the flow speed at point X, which has a diameter of 4 cm, is 13 m/s. What is the flow speed at point Y if it has a diameter of 10.4 cm?

Question 6  Water flows out of a 2.6-meter tall cylinder through an open pipe, as shown below.

At what horizontal distance from the base of the cylinder will the water stream strike the ground?
Question 7  An underground pipe carries water of density 1000 kg/m3 to a fountain at ground level, as shown below. At point A, 0.554 meters below ground level, the pipe has a cross-sectional area of 1 x 10-4 m2. At ground level, the pipe has a cross-sectional area of 0.766 x 10-4 m2.

If the water leaves the pipe at point B at a speed of 13 m/sec, what is the speed of the water at point A?
Question 8  What is the maximum height above the ground that the water reaches upon leaving the pipe vertically at ground level, assuming air resistance is negligible
