PhysicsLAB Worksheet
Metric Conversions #1

After reading through the steps to work these problems, examine the example to verify your understanding.
  • Step 1: rewrite the given expression in scientific notation without any prefixes.
  • Step 2: determine the exponent required for the desired outcome.
  • Step 3: subtract the exponent needed in Step 2 from the final exponent in Step 1.
  • Step 4: write out your answer in scientific notation
628 nm = ? μm
   Step 1: 628 nm = 6.28 x 102 x 10-9 m = 6.28 x 10-7 m
   Step 2: 1 μm = 10-6 m
   Step 3: -7 - (-6) = -1 [that is, what number must be added to -6 to get -7?]
   Step 4: 628 nm = 6.28 x 10-1 μm

   Check: -1 + (-6) = -7
Let the laws of exponents do your work for you!

Directions: Convert each of the given quantities into the unit specified. Each answer should be expressed in scientific notation.
